No Sway or Swagger

Installing a Hellwig Sway Bar on the Blacktop Bruiser.

The boys in the shop are working hard at turning their daily driver trucks into awesome rolling billboards for Blacktop Magazine. Today I got to lay there and watch them grunt and groan as they install a beefy sway bar kit from Hellwig.

For over 65 years the Hellwig family has been providing a tradition of quality products made in America for load and sway control of almost any truck, SUV or RV.

Boy did I bark real good when the guy in the big brown truck dropped off the box of parts. I knew we’d have fun in the garage this weekend.

They started out by inspecting all the parts in the box and reading the instructions. Billy started prepping the bushings with the supplied grease, while Tony re-read the instructions and studied the detailed photographs. Then they got down to my level and slid under the truck to start the gruntin’. Watch them work from my vantage point on this video.

When installing the axle tube bracket make sure it is rotated down enough to where the saddle bracket doesn’t touch the brake lines. Billy started mounting the brackets to the frame rails next to the spare wheel. In no-time, the bar was all mounted and adjusted to be sure it’s centered to the axle. They tightened all the nuts and torqued to specific ratings. Serious grunting going on. It’s important to review all the parts in the kit and separate the locking nuts with the standard nuts and use them accordingly. All-in-all the boys seemed to have installed this without any problems.

Time for a test drive. Tony got in the truck and took off like a bat out of hell. When he returned there was a grin from ear to ear. He claims that in slow turns as well as hard speed turns the truck remained fairly level and felt strong in the turns and stiff in a hard launch. What a difference! It took less than an hour to install even with these two knuckleheads. Check out the video on Blacktop TV. I can’t wait to go for a ride and not get tossed around the cabin.

I don’t mind being the spokesmutt here when I say, GO TO HELLWIG, when you are looking to increase the handling and load control for your truck, SUV or RV. In-fact they are also manufacturing parts for pro-touring hot rods now too. Good ol American engineering and design at it’s finest. www.HellwigProducts.com
